BMW/MINI: Elevated error rates for login attempts

Incident Report for Smartcar Brand Reliability

Resolved

After a thorough investigation, we’ve determined that BMW’s updated security measures, including hCaptcha protections, are preventing reliable web-based authentication. As a result, we can currently only support new BMW and MINI connections through our mobile SDKs.

What this means for you:
- If you’re using our mobile SDK, both Android and iOS are fully supported and working. No action is needed beyond updating to the latest SDK version.
- If you’re relying on web-based authentication, this flow is not available at the moment. We recommend transitioning to our mobile SDK.

We’re continuing to work on restoring web authentication and are in active discussions with BMW to help resolve this more broadly. We’ll share additional updates as soon as more information becomes available.

Identified

After completing our investigation into the BMW/MINI outage, we identified changes to BMW/MINI’s authentication flow as the root cause.

We have implemented a solution in our Android Mobile SDK to address the issue and are currently working on a corresponding update for our iOS Mobile SDK.

We remain committed to investing in reliable solutions for web-based authentication and will share more updates as soon as we have a clear path forward.
